Pressed flower art is one of the easiest DIY crafts for kids. Almost mess-free, it is great for children’s creativity and their fine motor skills and it is also a great way to create a personal and cost-effective present for mother’s day or just to let granny know she is much loved.

The best flowers for pressing
The key to a successful pressed flower art project is getting the right flowers.
While it may be tempting to go all out with fancy roses and attention-grabbing sunflowers, the best flowers to pick for a project and wild, small flowers, of the type you find in country meadows.
The best ones of all have low pollen (pollen stains paper really bad and can ruin your final result), thin petals and bold colors.
Good flowers for pressing with kids are:
- Daisies
- Violets
- Poppies
- Rose petals
- Cosmos
Good idea! Turn your morning walk into a wildflower-gathering expedition! Carry a basket or a ziplock bag and ask your child to spot and select the best one: a fun scavenger hunt type of activity, great to develop attention and focus, perfect for toddlers too.
Need to know! Ask your child to always double-check with you that the flowers are indeed free to pick and safe to touch!
How to carry flowers home for pressing
The easiest way to carry home your flowers is to use a ziplock bag: blow into it to make it puffy and delicately put the flowers inside, then zip it. This will help them arrive home safely.
How to press flowers
When we do pressed flower art with my daughter, we use a kids flower press. The one we use came with instructions and also cute cards and boxes to decorate (amazing, hours of fun!). However, if you don’t have a press, you can make your own. In that case, you will need:
- Blotted paper
- Cardboard
- A heavy object such as a dictionary to press them down or
- A tight elastic band
You can read how to make your own flower press for kids here.
To press flowers, you put flowers on the blotted paper, cover with cardboard and press down.
